India's leading online language portal Oneindia added yet another feather to its crown with the launching of the Gujarati portal http://gujarati.oneindia.com. Starting another language portal is a significant step taken by the Oneindia family towards widening its base further in the realm of India-specific portals. Gujarati is the seventh language added to Oneindia's existing suite that includes besides English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.
The Gujarati portal will regularly update news stories as-they-happen, including breaking news, cricket and other sports, sensex, political developments and stories of national and international importance. Users will be able to search relevant content in categories like news, business, Bollywood, Hollywood, jokes, picture gallery and videos.
Oneindia strongly believes that along with the 4 niche verticals started recently, a specific Gujarati language portal will help it tap the lucrative market and ensure a firm presence in northern India.
Sriram Hebbar, the Chief Executive Officer of Greynium Information Technologies Pvt. Ltd, which owns Oneindia, said: “These are important moves to make Oneindia a truly no. 1 portal in Indian language. Our objective is not only to reach out to the Gujarati readers, but also ensure that they appreciate our information (news and entertainment) in their mother tongue. That makes it more comfortable for our new readers.” The CEO added that Oneindia has plans to come up with more Indian-language portals in the future. The success story has really been inspiring so far.
Moreover, Oneindia's mission has not ended with the launch of the new portal. It also has plans to make its app on Android and Apple’s iOS platform available in Gujarati language, in order to make it interactive and user-friendly. Readers can also subscribe daily newsletter in the language similar to those who follow the other language portals. Even the portal's social media following on Facebook and Twitter will be in Gujarati. Keeping in mind the new generation of Internet users who use hand-held devices more than the traditional ones, Gujarati Oneindia is also available on http://m.oneindia.in/gujarati.
India is set to emerge the 3rd largest Internet-user base by 2013, after the USA and China. Gujarat, by the end of 2011-12, had 12.38 lakhs internet connections, including 8.64 lakhs broadband and 3.74 lakhs narrowband users. All villages have been connected with Internet connections. The skyrocketing online audience has made Oneindia more confident about the success of its new venture. "The recent explosion in online readership across the globe proves that people are moving towards digitization and our Gujarati portal will target the educated, affluent and globalised Indians," said Mr. Hebbar.
The Gujarati Diaspora, which numbers nearly 2 million, is not only a major constituent of the Gujarat-speaking population in the world but also is a big driving force behind the success story of brand Gujarat. The existing Gujarati sites get a major traffic from overseas and Oneindia Gujarati will only raise the competition level. It is determined to deliver the best product in the business to its followers, both in India and abroad.
Oneindia Gujarati has been developed in Unicode font to support all browsers.
